Pulling a trailer is no problem when equipped with the optional 5. 3-liter v8. on the road, tahoe is smooth and stable. It really is like a rock. It has plenty of power and its brakes work well. The cabin is comfortable and familiar, friendly and functional. Turn off the highway and the tahoe handles gravel, rugged two-tracks, mud, and snow. In any kind of driving, it's a good choice for someone who needs real carrying capacity. audio systems with touch-screen navigation are now available. Xm satellite radio delivers music, radio, sports, and other programming coast to coast. A rear-seat dvd entertainment system with wireless headphones keeps the kids busy. safety features include hydroboost brakes, which maintain power assist even if the engine stalls or is turned off. A tire-pressure monitor comes standard and has been improved for 2005. Stabilitrak electronic stability control and traction control are available as options. The mirrors on lt and z71 models feature puddle lamps that light up the perimeter. Press a button and they fold in for parking in narrow places. Heating elements keep off frost and ice. The left mirror automatically dims to reduce headlamp glare. The hatch is made of aluminum for light weight. The hatch features a flip-up window, and being able to open just the glass is often more convenient when loading groceries or outdoor gear, especially since it can be operated with the keyless remote. The front seats are big, wide, and fully adjustable in the lt. Optional seat heaters are easy to turn on and adjust. Switchgear is nicely designed and easy to operate. The map lights can be aimed. We appreciated the available power-adjustable pedals. Pressing a button moves the brake and accelerator pedals for an optimum driving position. This allows a shorter driver to move farther from the steering wheel (where the airbag is located). The tilt steering could use finer adjustments, but by adjusting the height and tilt of the seat it's possible for drivers of all sizes to find a comfortable position. Steering wheel-mounted controls add convenience and enable the driver to personalize functions. we love the lt's electronically controlled, automatic three-zone hvac system for its sophistication and ease of use. Change the driver's temperature, for example, and a panel displays the new temperature for a few moments, then display's the passenger's temperature, then displays the driver's temperature again. It's easy to operate the controls with the big knobs and a clear led display that's easy to understand. Separate electronic controls for the rear seating area improve comfort for second- and third-row passengers and pets. the standard ls setup is a manually controlled hvac system with three zones that allows temperature differentials of 30 degrees between driver and passenger. It works quite well. The third zone allows manual control of the rear air conditioning. Second-row bucket seats 490), an option on the lt, are less versatile than a bench seat, but more comfortable, more luxurious. We prefer the buckets. A pair of map lights flanks each dome light in the second and third row, a great feature when traveling or accessing gear. the tahoe provides slightly more cargo space behind the second row than the ford expedition does (63. 6 cubic feet vs. 60. 9 cubic feet). 2006 ford explorer review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. By careful, we mean ford spent serious effort dotting the i's and crossing the t's, looking after the details that make all the difference. At the same time, ford realigned the models and overhauled the pricing structure, giving customers more truck for less money, nearly $4,000 less in some cases. the new explorer is available with a v6 or v8. It's a traditional midsize suv with body-on-frame construction, and competes against the chevrolet trailblazer, jeep grand cherokee, toyota 4runner, and nissan pathfinder. we were well pleased with the new steering, the new suspension, and the new brakes used on the 2006 model, all of which have improved by at least one order of magnitude. The new 2006 explorer is quieter than last year's model and it rides better. It also leans less in corners and the brakes are more responsive. The rear seats fold flatter than on last year's models and the interior has been improved throughout. lineupthe explorer lineup from bottom to top includes the xls 27,175), xlt 28,870), xlt sport 30,845), eddie bauer 30,845), and limited 33,160), with all prices reflecting the inclusion of the $645 destination and delivery charges. Ford is quick to point out that these suggested retail prices are from $675 to $3,900 lower than those for comparably equipped 2005 models, which don't benefit from all the improvements for 2006. The average price reduction is $1,750. standard equipment on the xls includes the 4. 0-liter v6 engine and five-speed automatic, roll stability control (rsc), independent rear suspension, keyless entry, cruise control, message center, compass and thermometer, power windows, locks and mirrors, air conditioning, a floor console, rear vent windows and added 12-volt power point, a cargo management system, am/fm stereo with single cd or mp3 player, driver manual lumbar adjuster, and a tire-pressure monitoring system. xlt adds a chrome grille, unique bumper and trim, power seat, fog lamps, puddle lamps, 16-inch tires and wheels, an overhead console and additional storage. the eddie bauer version adds yet another grille design, running boards, roof rails, 17-inch wheels and tires, more wood and leather, 10-way power seat, message center and trip computer, and remote keyless entry. The eddie bauer is now split into two models, one with the luxury package added in and one without. The five-seater gains a flat load floor behind the second row of folding seats. Sirius satellite radio will be offered late in the model year. Dvd-based navigation is also available for about $1,500. the standard safety package includes the automatic all-wheel-drive system and roll stability control, a system already in use at volvo and land rover, that intervenes with throttle and brakes when the vehicle senses an impending tipover situation. Seat side air bags, an new adaptive energy-absorbing steering column, a passenger classifier in the seat, and the tpms. Ford says this truck meets all known future safety standard for front and side crash through 2010. walkaroundthe new 2006 ford explorer looks like the f-150 pickup in front, with finer, scaled-down features. With the v8 engine, the new explorer is rated to tow up to a whopping 7,300 pounds. And it's rated to carry up to 1,500 pounds of payload. interioreverything inside the explorer is new for 2006. Every switch, button, face, texture and panel of the interior has been changed, changed to a much more modern, crisper presentation, one of ford design boss j mays's personal design campaigns brought to life. There is a dark wood for most models and darker, richer wood for the eddie bauer version. The graphics are accented with metal surrounds both shiny and matte, depending. On the downside, we saw a fair amount of glare reflected off the dash top onto the windshield of the early models we drove. second-row seats are available as a 60/40 split bench seat, a 60/40 split bench with recline and third-row access, or two bucket seats and a console. The bucket seats are more comfortable for adults, but the bench seats fold down better for cargo. the third row, when ordered, sits almost two inches higher than before so kids can see out better. The third row is always a 50/50 split, but is available with manual or power folding and unfolding. and now the floor really is completely flat when all the seats are folded, with almost no forward rise (2 degrees as opposed to 10 before). The armrest is very large and filled with foam to assist in side crash protection, with the chrome latch pull rounded around the leading edge, but the door handle is buried underneath it, where the human wrist cannot comfortably go. Otherwise, the new explorer interior works very well. the new seats are at once more supportive and more comfortable than the old, hard explorer seats, the colors and trims and combinations are elegant and tasteful, the metallic trims just about right, not overdone. driving impressiontwo new engines are available for the 2006 ford explorer. The 4. 0-liter single-overhead-cam v6 has been retuned with variable valve timing and is rated at 210 horsepower and 254 pound-feet of torque. Both powertrains are quiet and smooth. The lighter v6 is a bit easier to turn and maneuver, but both are very pleasant, competent and quiet rides. ford told us before we drove the truck that customers had demanded quieter operation from the new explorer, so they have used the body-on-frame design to maximum advantage to quiet the truck down, isolate it from the road, and halt the transmission of noise and vibration. In this respect, ford has done an exemplary job on the new truck. The ac system operates with 30 percent less noise yet moves and exchanges more air. Conversations are easily heard, the music sounds good, and the mirrors, with their new square corners defying aero logic, are mercifully quiet, as are the tires. this is a big, heavy family truck with 15 years of continuous sales success and a few dark episodes behind it (involving previous-generation models), so they have utterly bathed it in safety equipment, from standard roll stability control (also used in volvo, land rover, and other ford truck products) to smart air bags to side air bags to an air curtain setup for the second and third rows. Ford says it expects a full house of five-star safety ratings, the highest possible, when the truck is tested. the new steering on the 2006 explorer has a much heftier feel at highway speeds with plenty of assist for parking. The new suspension is one of the most supple we've driven on any suv in this big class. And the new brakes work much harder with much less pedal pressure and travel than before. Body roll is much better (the explorer leans less in corners), and the general feeling of being planted on earth is stronger on this new chassis. The new chassis is some 63-percent stiffer than before, and a stiff chassis is a key element for crisp handling and a smooth ride. This truck manages to be isolated from the road, but well connected to it, at the same time. summaryford is a lot better at trucks than cars these days, and with the new explorer, they have shown just how good they. All-new suv is big, almost full size. introductionsuzuki forsakes its image as a small car manufacturer with the introduction of the xl7 crossover suv. The 2007 suzuki xl7 is all-new. Save for elimination of the hyphen the 2007 xl7 only shares its name with the old xl-7. the new xl7 is longer, wider and more powerful than the outgoing model. If its look seems faintly familiar that's because it's based on the same platform as the chevrolet equinox and pontiac torrent models from gm, though it shares no sheetmetal with them. The xl7 is assembled in canada alongside the equinox and torrent. The name xl7 denotes that this suzuki can be equipped to carry up to seven passengers. All-wheel drive is available, improving traction and stability in foul weather traction and on dirt or gravel roads. It's aided by its smooth-shifting five-speed automatic. lineupsuzuki is offering the xl7 in three trim levels: xl7 22,899), luxury 24,599) and limited 27,949). The xl7 and xl7 luxury are available in both five-passenger and seven-passenger configuration 1350). The top-of-the-line xl7 limited features standard seven-passenger seating. All-wheel drive 1600) is optional on each trim level. the base xl7 includes a five-speed automatic transmission with manumatic shift. Standard features also include remote keyless entry, power windows, door locks and mirrors, tilt steering wheel, cruise control, trip computer with driver information center, auto on/off headlamps, black roof rails, 16-inch alloy wheels, privacy glass, satin silver interior trim, overhead storage compartment, air conditioning with automatic climate control and an am/fm/cd stereo system with six speakers. the three-row, seven-passenger models feature nivomat load-leveling rear suspension, rear cargo under floor storage and rear air conditioning with separate controls. the xl7 luxury adds leather seating surfaces, power driver seat, heated front seats and wood trim accents. The edges of the turn signals wrap along the top of the pronounced front fender flare while the top side marks the edge of the hood, which covers the full width of the body ahead of the windshield. although the xl7 has the same wheelbase as the chevrolet equinox and pontiac torrent its overall length is nine inches greater. Some of this increase in length is in the front, giving the vehicle an unusually long hood line. the rear three-quarter view of the xl7 is the most awkward angle. It has a heavy d-pillar that slopes down from the roof line, leaving a relatively small third-row side window. The one-piece rear tailgate has an exceptionally curved window that tends to accentuate the bulk of the vehicle. the front bumper is cleverly built in to the front valence with the center portion painted black to make it appear smaller. The rear bumper is also painted black, but it appears hefty. the xl7 is built on a platform known as theta that was designed for use as an suv and is sold only in north america. All the vehicles are made in canada at a factory that is jointly owned by suzuki and general motors. interiorsince a sport utility is supposed to provide utility, it's good to find suzuki put plenty of thought into making the new xl7 as versatile as possible while providing an inviting interior, especially in the top trim level. in five-seat configuration, the xl7 provides a decent amount of interior space in both rows of seats. Indeed suzuki claims the leg room in the second row of seats is the most generous in the segment. there is plenty of cargo area behind the rear seats of the five-passenger models. getting in and out of the rear seats is easy, an added benefit to the xl7's long wheelbase. The rear wheel well is located behind the seats, allowing for a wide door opening with no intrusion from the wheelwell. those who opt for the third row of seats will find there is limited cargo space behind the rear seats when they are in use. However, they split in half and can be folded down to provide a flat surface for cargo carrying. compared to some third-row seats offered in other midsize suvs, the xl7's are relatively comfortable. There is actually enough depth and leg room that a person nearing six foot can sit back there for more than just a few miles. However, because of the small rear side windows it's fairly claustrophobic sitting in the far rear. As with most suvs, however, the seating is far from being as comfortable as that found in any minivan. naturally, the center row of seats fold down for cargo carrying. The center stack has a high mounted gearshift lever with window switches mounted alongside. In a way that's an oxymoron as the xl7 is not truck based, nor is it based directly on a car platform. Instead its platform is somewhere between a car and truck, an approach that's becoming more popular as interest in crossover suvs grows. Its handling falls somewhere between suv and car, as well. while the xl7 shares its basic design with the chevy equinox it is powered by a different engine. The v6 is derived from a gm engine with dual overhead camshafts. It puts out 252 horsepower, which is considerably more than the overhead-valve engine found in the gm suvs. It is also built in japan rather than in the us or canada. we found the performance to be quite adequate, at least in a straight line. The five-speed auto shifts gears smoothly but the engine is somewhat noisy. The transmission includes a manual shift feature. We found it somewhat disconcerting that the selected gear does not show up on the marking beside the gearshift lever itself. The xl7 is not designed for serious off-roading. the all-wheel-drive version is intended to provide added security while driving in adverse weather conditions. Upon checking the specs we discovered why: the equinox has electrically powered rack-and-pinion steering while the xl7 gets more traditional hydraulic powered rack-and-pinion steering. That's not to say it's dangerous; just remember that the xl7 is no sports sedan. summarythe suzuki xl7 is ideal for those who need the roominess and smoothness of a minivan but want the look and feel of a suv coupled with decent performance and reasonable fuel economy.
