2002 volvo xc70 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Traditional volvo virtues for a new generation. introductionthe v70 is part of a new generation of volvos, a generation that combines the traditional volvo virtues of safety and practicality with an avant-garde style and a sassy attitude.  all-new last year (2001), the v70 is a mid-size wagon based on the same mechanical platform as volvo's prestigious s80 sedan. The kinship shows: while v70 surrenders nothing in practicality to other mid-size wagons, and exceeds most, if not all, in safety. And this sexy swede does more than haul moldings home from home depot. In t5 form, especially, it just plain hauls, but with the refined demeanor of a european luxury sedan.  v70's practical side shows in an adaptable seating arrangement, and a cargo compartment with tie-down hooks and other useful accessories. Its safety heritage lives on with a safety-cell structure and active seats rigged to thwart whiplash injuries. Occupants are shielded by airbags positioned ahead, beside and above. Responsive steering, electronic brake enhancements, and optional traction control help avoid accidents in the first place.  but with a selection of turbocharged engines, aggressive suspension tuning and low-profile performance tires, the v70 also likes to go out and play.  . lineupthe v70 line has expanded both up and down for 2002.  at base-level now is a naturally aspirated (non-turbo) version, powered by a 2. 4-liter five-cylinder engine that develops 168 horsepower. Badged simply v70, it retails for $30,025 with a five-speed manual transmission, and $1000 more with a five-speed automatic. The five-speed automatic is standard on this model, while volvo's geartronic automatic with manual override is a $200 option. Befitting its extra brawn, the 2. 4t comes with wider tires on larger wheels, and adds a power glass sunroof plus a memory function for power seats and mirrors.  also returning is the v70 t5 36,425), whose 2. 3-liter inline-five with high-pressure turbocharging musters 247 horsepower through a five-speed manual gearbox. The geartronic is the only automatic available, and it costs $1200. The t5 also comes with firmer suspension settings and even wider tires for a sporty flavor, and adds a few more comfort/convenience items to the standard-equipment list. Traction control is standard as well.  the other new model for 2002 is an all-wheel-drive version of the 2. 4t, which lists for $35,975. The v70 2. 4t awd normally sends 95 percent of its driving torque to its front wheels, but uses a viscous coupling to direct power to the rear wheels when necessary. The rear differential is open, but an electronic system called tracs can selectively brake either rear wheel to control slipping. The v70 2. 4t awd can be identified by a slightly higher ground clearance and by special seven-spoke alloy wheels, and the only transmission available is the geartronic. Otherwise it's equipped the same as the front-drive v70 2. 4t  additionally, volvo manufactures the v70 xc, or cross country, an suv-like cross-over vehicle based on the v70 much the same way that the subaru outback is based on the all-wheel-drive legacy wagon. (see review of the cross country in a separate newcartestdrive. Com report.  volvo's computer-linked dynamic stability and traction control (dstc) system may be added to any of the 2. 4-liter models for $1100. A navigation system is offered as well.  all v70s uphold volvo's tradition of safety, with dual-threshold front airbags, dual side-impact airbags, front and rear head-curtain airbags, whips active whiplash protection, and both iso-fix and latch anchors for child seats. walkaroundthe overall shape of the v70 looks boxy at first, a natural reaction to almost any wagon. But closer scrutiny reveals fresh styling ideas for such a large package, and an aggressive stance due to a relatively wide track. There's also something here that was missing from the typical tank-like shape of previous volvo wagons: shapely curves.  the form evolves from a basic wedge-shape, with a high tail and low prow capped by volvo's signature diagonal-slash grille. Hard creases in the bowed hood taper from canted a-pillars down to the sides of the grille, and thrust it forward as the leading edge of the vehicle. Headlight clusters unified behind curving polycarbon lenses notch into recesses flanking the grille, while body-colored bumpers trimmed with black molding wrap around the volvo's face to meet the front wheel wells.  above prominent rolled shoulders, roof pillars and side glass curve inward to meet the roof panel, softening hard corners and diminishing the visual massiveness of the wagon's rear bay. The rear liftgate also bows slightly in a curvy profile, but maintains an essentially vertical plane to maximize interior cargo space. Composed of steel-reinforced polyresin fiberglass, the back door tucks between two thin vertical taillights mounted high in a format carried over from the previous wagon. interiora stylish interior features rich appointments with an understated air of elegance. Muted tone-on-tone colors are enhanced by sparing touches of ersatz redwood trim. It's a clean design, with buttons and switches in logical positions and analog gauges housed in an uncluttered instrument panel.  up front are two bolstered bucket seats astride a multi-purpose console. The seats are anything but conventional. They're extremely comfortable and also smart, performing tricks when necessary for safety or saving space. The front seatbacks incorporate mechanisms to guard against whiplash from a rear-end impact. During such a crash, the seatback moves rearward to reduce acceleration forces on the rider's back and neck, as the headrest pushes forward and upward slightly to meet the neck and head as they are thrust backward.  the rear bench seat accommodates three passengers easily, and features three-point safety belts in all three seating positions, which are anchored in the backrest. Individual seat-back sections in the rear seats move to two different positions: one with a 30 degree tilt for comfort, the other more vertical at 25 degrees. The latter is useful when a few more inches of space would make room for more gear in the rear.  the rear seatback also folds forward easily to form a flat cargo floor.  that back cargo bay can be fitted with available convenience items from volvo, like a container for shopping bags or a table that pops up from beneath the second-row seat, for use with an optional third seat sized for children. (a new $1300 versatility package includes the third seat with integrated booster seat, and the folding table.) for infants and toddlers, anchors are in place to secure two new designs for rear-facing child safety seats. Its lively kick and lithe attitude kindle a soothing sense of confidence, a sense that though it's an unpredictable path we travel, with pitfalls along the way, the going doesn't have to be dangerous or even uncomfortable in a volvo.  the t5's high-pressure intercooled turbo puts out 247 horsepower and churns 243 pounds-feet of torque across a flat band spread between 1800 and 4800 rpm. With high torque at relatively low engine speed, and the typical turbo lag minimized, this engines impresses with its quick surges and quiet demeanor.  the five-speed manual gearbox, rarely found in a wagon, has a sporty short-throw stick and brings crisp control. Then push the lever forward to bump up a gear, or tip it rearward to shift down.  the new v70 platform, lifted from volvo's larger s80 sedan, has a longer wheelbase and broader track than the pre-2001 model. That creates a solid foundation to attach the macpherson-strut front suspension and multi-link rear axle. Bonding of body panels in lieu of spot welding contributes to exceptional torsional stiffness, which in turn defines the car's predictable linear behavior.  push the t5 through downhill curves and it remains anchored to the pavement, with the body maintaining a level stance. There's little lateral lean through the turns, and scant dive from the nose when standing on brakes. Nor does the tail dip during a sudden acceleration.  all v70s now feature abs to prevent brake lock-up, along with emergency brake assist and electronic brake force distribution (ebd) to ensure maximum stopping power under all conditions.  now standard on t5 is volvo's dynamic stability and traction control (dstc), employing an on-board computer and various motion sensors tied to the anti-lock brakes. This sophisticated device monitors the vehicle's forward progress and, if potentially dangerous oversteer or understeer is detected, acts automatically to correct the instability by braking one or more wheels.  it all adds up to an agile but controllable car, capable of sporty moves and high performance; but with the flavor o. 2000 ford explorer review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. America's favorite suv. introductionthe ford explorer is easily the best-selling sport-utility in america. Nearly 2. 8 million suvs were sold in 1998 and some 425,000 of them were ford explorers. About 430,000 explorers were sold in 1999. The explorer outsold its nearest competitor nearly two-to-one.  what's the significance of all these numbers? Simply this: ford must be doing something right to sell so many explorers. The xls includes such niceties as power mirrors, locks and windows, an am/fm stereo cassette audio system, and aluminum wheels. With 4-wheel drive, the xls starts at $25,170.  explorer drivers can move up to the $27,185 xlt, which adds fog lights, privacy glass and interior trim items; the 4x4 xlt lists for $29,150.  further up the explorer hierarchy is the eddie bauer edition for $31,740 with two-wheel drive. This explorer adds 16-inch wheels, automatic temperature controls, electrochromatic rearview mirror, upgraded audio and trim items, including leather upholstery. The eddie bauer 4x4 starts at $33,705, or $34,120 with all-wheel drive. The limited is the top of the explorer line, with more leather plus simulated woodgrain, special wheels and exterior trim, and retails for $31,995 for 4x2, $33,960 for 4x4, $34,375 for awd. walkaroundjust about everything has changed on the explorer since its 1991 introduction. Still, if asked to describe a sport-utility vehicle, most people could save time by just showing a picture of the explorer.  the xlt is the typical explorer, well equipped but not overly fancy or too expensive. It features a bright front and rear bumper with an integrated rub strip. Its compound headlamp array includes the headlights plus parking lights, turn signals and side marker lights in a single aero-curved assembly set into the bright grille surround. The grille itself is simple, with a large crossbar decorated with the ford blue oval badge and three smaller vertical bars. The rear bumper echoes the front in appearance, but comes standard with a 3500-pound trailer towing capacity. Tri-color taillights and a liftgate with a flip-open rear window finish off the rear.  the explorer uses an independent short/long arm front suspension with torsion bars and a live axle mounted on two-stage variable-rate leaf springs at the rear. A 4. 0-liter pushrod v6 is standard in the xls and can be upgraded to the 4. 0-liter overhead-cam v6 for those wanting more performance. These engines come with a choice of 5-speed manual or 5-speed automatic transmission. The xlt and more expensive models, however, come standard with a 5. 0-liter overhead-valve v8 with a 4-speed automatic. The 215-horsepower v8 cranks out 288 foot-pounds of torque. Ford made its trailer towing package standard on all v8-equipped explorers. interiorthe inside of the ford explorer looks like america's living room, which is appropriate, considering that so many americans spend so much time there. The front passengers get a pair of comfy captain's chairs, covered in a premium cloth for the xlt. Big doors make access easy, though the xlt doesn't have the running boards standard on the eddie bauer and limited models. The dash features full instrumentation in a neatly laid out nacelle. The radio and hvac (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) controls are centered on the dash in a pod; that pod also houses a knob that controls the 4wd operation. The audio and cabin temperature controls are easy enough to use though we'd prefer an old-fashioned twist knob to control station tuning on the radio. The xlt has a handy center console/arm rest.  front seat side-impact airbags are optional. Considering the poor rear vision suvs have when backing up, this rear sensing system is an important safety option. driving impressionthe explorer is easier to drive on a daily basis than the bigger suvs in the ford stable. It is far more nimble in crowded parking lots with narrow spaces or on forest roads with tight switchbacks. If a small turning circle is paramount, the 2-door is a better choice, at 34. 7 feet curb to curb, though the 4-door explorer manages a fairly nimble 37. 3 feet.  the v6 is the most popular engine. But the 5. 0-liter v8 assures a certain command of the road with an ability to accelerate with all but the sportiest of automobiles, handy for merging or passing. It's the best choice for doing any towing, with reserve power for climbing hills and bucking headwinds. But the explorer is indeed a truck. It's responsive to its rack-and-pinion steering, reacting smartly to a turn of the wheel, but there's no denying the high-mounted center of gravity and overall mass of the vehicle. It handles like a truck. The explorer's relatively heavy tires and live rear axle arrangement also work against a luxury car ride. The explorer shares the cargo-hauling capability of the station wagons of yore, but it adds ground clearance and, in 4x4 versions, the promise of all-season mobility. 2003 saab 9-5 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Fast, stable and comfortable. introductionthe saab 9-5 line of sedans and wagons are comfortable, convenient and enjoyable to drive around town and on the open road. Precise steering and excellent high-speed stability make the 9-5 a great companion for covering distances in a hurry. The seats are supportive and the interior is well designed. The saab 9-5 aero is an absolute delight for working through fast traffic. The luxurious 9-5 arc is no slouch either, offering brisk acceleration performance.  the saab 9-5 benefited from suspension, steering and styling changes last year that sharpen its handling and its looks. For 2003, the electronic stability program (esp) is now standard on all models, a real benefit.  . lineupsaab 9-5 (pronounced 'nine-five') is available in three trim levels, or 'forms.' the 9-5 linear, arc, and aero each offer a distinct personality. Essentially, they match interior styles and engine performance to suit the different personalities and priorities of their owners. Linear sedan 33,995) and wagon 34,695) come with an impressive level of standard equipment, including leather upholstery with leather door-panel inserts, a walnut-trimmed instrument panel, power front seats with electric heat, power sliding sunroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, cabin air filter, power windows, power central locking, steering-wheel audio controls, am/fm/cd/cassette stereo with seven speakers, front and rear fog lights, abs, and traction control. Arc sedan 33,650) and wagon 39,350) comes standard with the new sentronic five-speed automatic transmission, which can be manually shifted using buttons on the steering wheel. Standard features include ventilated leather seats with electric heat plus their own internal three-speed fan to circulate cooling air in the summer. Rear seats are heated as well and are much appreciated by rear-seat passengers. Aero wagon and sedan come with a sports suspension and 17-inch wheels, and are distinguished by unique exterior styling cues, special bolstered leather sport seats and metallic-finish dash trim. Aero models cost the same as the arc models, but the power-ventilated leather seats are optional 995).  the sentronic automatic transmission is optional on linear and aero 1300).  . walkaroundsaab revised the styling of the 9-5 last year to give it a sportier look. That look remains unchanged for 2003.  up front, smooth bumpers, an integrated grille, and clear-lens headlamps emphasize performance. Those clear headlight lenses show off the optional bi-xenon projector headlamps, which give the 9-5 a high-tech, night-fighter look. On the wagons, a rear decor panel visually unites the tail lamps for a tighter, more solid appearance. Aero models sport an aero badge. Badges on the trunk lids identify the engines on the linear (2. 3t) and arc (3. 0t) models.  exclusive wheels differentiate linear, arc, and aero. Linear rides on 16-inch, ten-spoke alloy wheels, while arc runs five-spoke 16-inch alloys. Sporty 17-inch alloy wheels with ten spokes come on the aero model, with low-profile 225/45wr-17 all-season radials, a tip-off that this is a high-performance car.  overall, the saab 9-5 has a sculpted, scandinavian appearance. Its aerodynamic lines are tautly drawn. Yet it's also practical in that scandinavian way. The traditional saab clamshell hood remains. Interior materials are high quality.  the seats in the aero wagon offer sufficient side bolstering for hard cornering, yet sliding into and out of them was easy. There were plenty of adjustments, yet it wasn't critical to adjust them just so in order to get comfortable.  the arc we drove also had a nice leather interior, with perforated center inserts on the seats. The arc's seats are particularly nice when it's very hot or very cold outside. We loved the arc's seat fans. Two fans are located in each of the front seats, one in the seatback and one in the seat bottom, that draw air in through perforations in the leather. But they do a good job of keeping things aired out down under on those sultry days. When it's cold, the seat heaters can be turned on, and feature adjustable temperature settings, useful as the car warms up. Seat heaters in the rear are appreciated by rear-seat passengers who generally have to wait longer for the car to warm up than front-seat passengers.  brushed aluminum panels on the aero's dash give it a sporty look. It's pocked for better grip, between 2 and 4 o'clock on the right side and 8 and 10 on the left.  arc features an attractive center dash, though the burled walnut wood trim looked like plastic. The doors are trimmed very well.  the instrument panel is curved at the top in the same shape as the steering wheel, affording an unobstructed view of the speedometer, tachometer, fuel, temperature and turbo boost gauges. It's fun to watch the boost gauge, as the power responds more to boost than to revs.  big buttons for the sound and climate systems are located in a large rectangle in the center console and are easy to understand. The audio controls for the harmon/kardon stereo are great. Redundant audio controls on the steering wheel reduce distraction from the road. The radio is wired hot so it can be turned on without the key, useful when parked. Vents are attractive and designed well for aiming.  the leather-stitched shifter knob on automatic models has a good feel and is easy and pleasant to operate. The gearshift knob for the manual transmission is also leather-stitched and pear-shaped and likewise has a good feel. Manual models have a light on the dash indicating when it's time to upshift to conserve fuel, a feature we could live without.  saab comes up with unorthodox, but effective solutions to interior needs. In the 9-5, these solutions are clever and very successful. A cup holder pops out of the dash from a vertical slot the size of a cd and pivots around to hold cans of soda or that grande cappuccino. A fixed cup holder in the center console is a bit less convenient, especially if there's already lots of stuff in there.  the far end of the right side-view mirror bends outward, which provides a wider view of the right lanes. It requires familiarization to determine the location of an approaching car at a quick glance. We found it didn't work well in the rain. When moving from the left lane to the right lane, it could sometimes make an approaching car look like it was changing lanes and moving toward us.  interior lighting is excellent, including one map light in a rotating directional ball, like the reading lights in airliners. The placement of the gauges, the cup holder, radio switches and the map light indicate real thought went into the saab 9-5 interior. Instrument lights can be switched off by pressing the night panel button for improved nighttime visibility.  split visors allow shielding the sun when it's in the corner of the windshield or when changing directions fre. driving impressionthe saab 9-5 is a wonderful car for working through freeway traffic. It's as stable as a rock at elevated velocities and feels supremely confident in sweeping turns, taking high-speed turns like it's on rails.  handling and steering response are terrific. Saab extensively reworked the chassis and suspension of all three models last year for sharper handling and steering response. There's less suspension pitching or other movements in the rear. The ride is firmer, but we found the arc handles bumps well, damping and softening big bumps. We found the arc offered good grip in corners, though, there is some traditional saab body lean. Steering was slow, but precise. Power Windows✔ Tachometer✔ AM/FM✔ Climate Control✔ Leather Seats✔ Sunroof/Moonroof✔ Alloy Wheels

2003 Saab 9-5 SportWagon Review This car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Linear sedan ($33,995) and wagon ($34,695) come with an impressive level of standard equipment, including leather upholstery with leather door-panel inserts, a walnut-trimmed instrument panel, power front seats with electric heat, power sliding sunroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, cabin air filter, power windows, power central locking, steering-wheel audio controls, AM/FM/CD/cassette stereo with seven speakers, front and rear fog lights, ABS, and traction control. Arc sedan ($33,650) and wagon ($39,350) comes standard with the new Sentronic five-speed automatic transmission, which can be manually shifted using buttons on the steering wheel. Aero models cost the same as the Arc models, but the power-ventilated leather seats are optional ($995).  The Sentronic automatic transmission is optional on Linear and Aero ($1300). Badges on the trunk lids identify the engines on the Linear (2.3t) and Arc (3.0t) models.
